BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal has been in active politics from last two decades. Because of his clean image in politics, he is considered to be one the most popular leaders in Assam. Sonowal began his career public life since his days as a student leader.

Sarbananda Sonowal was born on 31 October 1962 in Dinjan, Dibrugarh, Assam. He was born to Shri Jibeswar Sonowal and Smt. Dineswari Sonowal in Dinjan.  After his graduation he did his LL.B., B.C.J. educated from Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University.

Hailing from Interior village in upper Assam Sarbananda says, “I used to go school in very interior places while paddling bicycle. My father was very a simple man and he tried his best to provide all our brothers and sisters with best of education. After finishing my school I admitted into college which was about 20 kilometer from our house. I went to my college by my bicycle every day and those days were days of struggle.”

Currently, he is also the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Youth Affairs and Sports. Sarbananda Sonowal Elected to Lok Sabha after defeating Union Minister Ranee Narah in Lakhimpur constituency, Sonowal is credited with leading the BJP in the state as president, which helped it bag 7 seats out of 14 in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Inspired by the ideals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Modi is the future of India and he is the hope of millions of people of India. Over the years, congress has pushed our state into a deep region of darkness. Today Assam is one of the underdeveloped states of India. What Congress has done wrong to Assam has to be corrected. Though it will need time but will definitely get corrected.”

Sonowal is known for his stance on illegal migrants from Bangladesh and soon after taking the oath he had said that his priority is Assam's all round development besides zero tolerance for the illegal migrants and complete seal of Indo-Bangla border.

He is a Member of Parliament of the 16th Lok Sabha from the BJP and has previously served as the president for BJP Assam Pradesh. He is also a National Executive Member of the party.

He was the president of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) from 1992 to 1999. He was given the title of Jatiya Nayak by the AASU, for his firebrand politics and dynamism.

Until 2011 January, Sonowal was a member of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He then joined BJP and was made the National Executive Member. Later on, he was made the State Spokesperson of the BJP unit prior to his assignment to head the state as the new president in 2012.

With the Rio Olympics to be held in Brazil next year, India's sports ministry has decided to come up with a variety of incentives for athletes, coaches, and National Sports Federations. Sonowal announced that the amount for senior, junior and sub-junior competitions has been increased to Rs 5 lakh, Rs 7 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively.

Air travel for senior players and coaches for a distance beyond 500 km, and for a distance beyond 1, 200 km in economy class for the junior players have been allowed, to promote sports and welfare of sports persons. To boost sporting activities in the state, the Sports Ministry has formally sanctioned a central assistance of Rs 200 crore to Jammu and Kashmir.

Sonowal had stated that Jammu and Kashmir has a lot of sporting talent which is not finding expression due to inadequate sports facilities- which he is keen on changing with the Centre's assistance

He is also working hard to make FIFA under -17 World Cup successful, which will be held in India for the very first time.

The event will be held in September-October, 2017. The Minister has also been active in addressing the spot-fixing issue in the IPL and has said that such scandals have prompted the government to push for the introduction of Sports Fraud Bill in the Parliament. 
 

He is a man of great spiritual strength. His is initiated by leading Guru of Assam His Holiness Krishna Guru. Inspired by the teachings of his Guru Sarbananda Sonowal has tremendous reverence for our county’s tradition and culture. “Everyone should take a Guru coming from Guru Parampara. Guru is the person who guides us to light. Today our new generation youths are deflected from this great tradition of Guru and Sishya and this is because of this there are so much of ills in the society. All the ills of the society are increasing due to dwindling faith in God and in our scriptures. We should worship Guru, Ganga, Gita and of course Gai (Cow)” he said.

He is also a life member of ISKCON New Delhi Temple and visited the ISKCON New Delhi many times.    

Still living a life bachelor Sarbananda Sonowal completely dedicated his life to sever his country and its people. His only motto in life is to serve his motherland. For him politics is life and to serve to people is his mission in life.
